Divorce certificates, final orders and decrees absolute

The document confirming a divorce varies by country and legal system. It may be a certificate from a civil registry, a court order or a judgment accompanied by confirmation that it is final. In England and Wales, proof of the end of a marriage may be a final order or decree absolute. See GOV.UK’s guidance on obtaining a copy if you need the original record.

Please send the full document rather than only its first page. A conditional order or other interim document should not be described in translation as a final divorce. Where a judgment includes several decisions, the translation must reflect the wording and status of the document supplied.

Translation for UK and overseas submissions

A translated divorce document may be requested when recording a change in marital status, preparing to marry or submitting papers to a court or public authority. The recipient decides which evidence and translation format it will accept. Tell us the destination country, organisation and intended use before the work begins.

For a UK submission, ask whether a certified translation is required. For an overseas submission, the authority may request a sworn translation by a translator recognised in that country. Notarisation or legalisation is a separate requirement and should be confirmed with the recipient.

Accuracy across names and court details

We pay particular attention to the names of both parties, marriage and divorce dates, case numbers, court names and references to attached documents. If a name has changed or has different transliterations, provide the spelling used in your passport or application. The translation must still accurately reflect the original record.

Stamps, endorsements and notes may be important to the recipient. Include the reverse of the document and any apostille or attached confirmation of finality. If part of the source is unclear, a better copy may be needed rather than a guessed reading.

We will confirm the translation scope and delivery estimate for your Birmingham enquiry. If you need an NDA, ask before sending the documents. Translating a divorce record does not determine whether another country will recognise the divorce; that decision is separate from the translation service.

Frequently asked questions

Can you translate a decree absolute or final order?

Yes. We translate decrees absolute, final orders and overseas divorce records. Send the complete document and explain where it will be used.

Do I need the whole divorce judgment translated?

Ask the receiving organisation which pages or documents it requires. We can quote for the complete judgment or a specified document, but an extract should not be presented as a complete translation.

Does a certified translation make a divorce recognised abroad?

No. Certification relates to the translation. Recognition of a divorce and any legalisation requirements depend on the receiving authority and applicable rules.
